Gamecocks Win the Home Opener 24-15

Steve Spurrier's debut as South Carolina Gamecocks was a home opener victory as Blake Mitchell throws for 332 yards and 3 touchdowns against the Central Florida Golden Knights, 24-15.

Spurrier's premiere is a win at the home opener. It must have been pleasing for the home crowd. The way Spurrier has been cast, though, you could have expected a wider margin.

South Carolin'a weak spot on the offense was the run. Against the UCF defense, the Gamecocks only managed 41 yards total offense throughout the game, while the USC defense allowed only 82 yards of total offense on the ground; quite a defensive struggle, for both teams against the run.

UCF passed for 269 yards of offense with one interception against USC's 332 yards and three touchdowns.

The Gamecocks go against a very, very good Georgia team Saturday after next at Athens. Likely then the nation will have some idea just how good the Gamecocks really are.

Our guess is the USC fans will be hold their collective breaths until after that game.
