The Maryland Terps come bursting in the the AP Top 20 at 17th after defeating 6th ranked Boston College, 73-71.

This game was one of the best we have heard/seen all year. Both teams were neck and neck in performances throughout the game, but free throws killed Boston College.

This was actually a must win for BC because this loss was their second since last Monday's rankings. The Eagles went down against 14th ranked Michigan State last Tuesday 77-70.

Boston College fell to 13th in the AP as a result.

The story on the loss to the Spartans was turnovers. The stats on points, three pointers free throwing found BC lagging behind Spartans. Michigan State was red hot at the charity line at 87 percent to BC's 66 percent.

Jared Dudley, Sean Marshal, and Craig Smith all combined to put up more than half the points in their losing cause at Michigan State. In the Maryland game, the same three combined for the lion's share of the point, but the difference was free throws. BC was a dead as can be at 31 percent shooting.

Will Boston College disappear into the ACC cellar? Hardly, but we bet that the Eagles' squad will have aching arms this week drilling in free throws

Boston College plays no more ACC teams the rest of December. Their toughest game in December, after Maryland will be at Rhode Island on New Year's Eve.

Now about Maryland:

Are they going to be the terror of the ACC? Not likely. Statistically, the Terps appear to be an average team They are currently blazing hot on the offense but suffering on defense, in several areas., something they must remedy ebfore conference play recommences January 7th against Miami.

Maryland has hope on the defense, however. They are plus three in turnover margin, something that will matter in the depths in the season in February and March.
