US-CERT will launch a program to create a common identifying number for all new viruses discovered by anti-virus companies, according to an on-line article in E-week.

The details in the story aren't clear, but the article says that new virus code samples are submitted by anti-virus companies to the Mitre Corp., based in Bedford, Mass, and if within two hours no other samples are received, CERT will assign it a number. In the event of multiple submissions within the two-hour windows, AV companies are asked in this program to settle any troubles amongst them if a conflict arises.

The new program launches October 3rd.
