For the first 15 minute it looked as if St. Johns was going to make a game against Duke.

Then Duke played defense.

Until about five minutes left in the first half, St. Johns was tied with Duke and had previously exchanged leads with the Blue Devils four times.

Against the top hoops team in the nation, St. John made a game of it shooting a respectable 43 percent from the field and holding Duke to 50 percent. Duke hit 26 percent from the arc against 14 for St. Johns. Not too bad, except they couldn't maintain the Big Stat, the score, 70-57.

This loss places St. Johns at 5-3. Their first conference game is at Seton Hall (6-3), January 4th.

Duke goes to 10-0 with this game. Their first conference game is at Wake Forest January 8th, a game which will almost certainly be televised. Duke is number one in the rankings, a place they have been since November. Wake Forest is 22nd.
