Subject: Weekly Summary of Combat Operations, from February 19th to February 25th, Inclusive.

Message begins:

The tempo of combat operations continued at a steady pace.

Chernarus Defense, Naval and air forces have engaged in four operations in three regions.

1) 2nd Bn Chernarus 13th Separate Mountain Motorized Rifle Brigade was ordered for the second time in two weeks to launch a counterattack against separatists holding Ahmsdorf in Werferlingen, Friday night.

Ahmsdorf is part of the defensive line being held by separatist forces. The area south of that line is a contested area characterized by near constant enemy probes south.

Included in the orders to eject separatist forces from town was a task to eliminate two of the operatives who were commanding the enemy force, Grigoriy Bukharinn and Stanija Babovic. Electronic intercepts and messages about this command group indicated they were planning to cleanse the town of opponents.

The tactical plan was for the two tanks to attack from the south, as the infantry and recon elements pressed from the east. The two rifle squads became bogged down from enemy fire, forcing command squad to penetrate the town alone.

Enemy riflemen were holed up in several buildings, forcing the squad to clear each one, room by room. When the commander came to the building housing the criminal command group, they were eliminated. Documents were taken from the dead body of Babovic.

Enemy reinforcements were very light. The commander quickly pushed north to a site where a dead drop had taken place, and retrieved the documents. Battalion recon staff said the documents contained data taken from a major's laptop computer by a friendly informant.

The task force then was ordered south out of town, and as they moved out, two enemy technicals appeared. They were destroyed by tanks covering the retreat.

Casualties were light. 2nd squad lost one.

2) Recon staff from 2nd Bn, Chernarus 13th Separate Mountain Motorized Rifle Brigade was ordered to Ribbenstedt in Werferlingen to intercept a large separatist mobile force heading for that area Saturday.

Last week, 2nd Bn launched a relief operation after a 43rd Mountain Rifle Corps recon rifle group became stranded in town. Casualties were light. The relief operation was a success.

The tactical plan for the meeting engagement was for a solid line of forces lined up east to west. Tanks and armored scout cars on the wings, with the rifles in the center.

The first contact was with infantry on the eastern wing of the defensive line. Firefights were very intense, but the enemy was stopped. A similar enemy probe attacked the left wing. That one was much more successful.

During this time, separatists set up a light armor block south of the river at Horsingen. One fuel truck suffered a crew hit, but the other passed on to Horsingen and to safety.

Enemy armor hit our armor block on the eastern wing, and at the western wing. But enemy armor overran the left wing causing that defensive node to collapse.

The commander declared the mission outcome doubtful, and ordered a retreat. Relieving forces were on their way, but they would not arrive in time to salvage the situation.

One tank was ordered to cover the right wing as those forces retreated. The commander deemed it prudent not to try to penetrate the enemy's positions in the west to attain a local superiority. The remainder of the force was withdrawn.

At the enemy armor block the relief force tank destroyed the armor block, enabling commander to retreat back to base.

Casualties were heavy. One tank and one BRDM was destroyed. 2nd squad was completely wiped out, and 3rd squad was whittled down to five. Command squad lost one.

Enemy armor losses were heavy as well. Field count were one T-55, one T-34/85, one BMP-2, one BMP-1, and two BRDM scout cars destroyed.

3) A rifle task force formed from 1st Bn Chernarus 4th Separate Light Rifle Brigade was ordered to recapture the village of Msta in Chernarus Monday night.

Separatist forces captured the village early Monday morning. They were led by the commanders Ferid Murad and Ann Allilueyeva, both of whom were experienced fighters, who served with the rebels from the 2009 civil war. They did not hold commands at the time.

Msta was the subject of a separate operation last month, when CDF forces retook the town, but suffered heavy casualties. As in the January operation, separatists took prisoners, this time three civilian aid workers.

The tactical plan was to split the task force into two, and attack from two directions, 90 degrees apart, in an effort to avoid separatist artillery. As in the last operation, one BRDM scout car was held back for transport of released prisoners.

Command squad with the heavy machine gun fire support of one BRDM attacked into town from the southwest, while the rest of the task force hit it from the southeast. Enemy counterfire was very heavy. An enemy RPG gunner destroyed the assisting BRDM.

Once in town, command squad pushed towards the criminal command element's housing, clearing out buildings along the way. The criminal command element was eliminated after Allilueyeva tried to run, but instead ran into 2nd and 3rd squads.

The commander seized documents from Allilueyeva's person.

The released prisoners refused to be evacuated with the task force. Fearing the arrival of enemy reinforcements, the commander decided to retreat from town and leave the civilians to their fate.

Casualties were heavy. 2nd and 3rd squad lost seven each and were folded into one unit, then ordered to retreat back to base. One BRDM was destroyed, and the covering SU-25 ground interdiction fighter was shot down with the loss of the crew.

4) 1st Bn Chernarus 24th Separate Light Mountain Rifle Brigade was ordered to attack Location 2790,4081 in Summa. The location is one of a string of outposts manned by separatists.

The location defensive node was commanded by separatist operatives Aleksandr Evtushenko and Irina Shayk, but of whom recently came to the attention of operations staff. Shayk was known to carry detailed documents on the separatist plans for the region on her person.

Additionally, local friendly operatives recently planted a dead drop of documents stolen from separatists commanders.

The attack began as all three rifle elements advanced on the location from the southeast on a narrow front. Two BRDM scout cars were run forward to help provide heavy machine gun fire support for the attack operation.

The location had three bunkers, all three of which were cleared out, despite heavy losses by the task force. Initially, artillery played a role in eliminating technicals in the area, enabling the task force to close and destroy.

Once resistance from the separatists collapsed, the command set about locating Shayk, and seizing the important documents she kept on her person. The commander also located and took the documents left at the dead drop.

By the time the withdraw order came down, enemy technicals had infiltrated in from the north. Their arrival caused great damage to the rifles. One BMP-2 was positioned as a block to command squad retreating.

The commander ordered an artillery smoke mission to cover their retreat back to base.

Casualties were heavy. 2nd squad was wiped out and 3rd squad lost seven, Command squad lost five.
