Foreign Films and Netflix subject logo: CULTURE

Just finished watching the Chinese language cop drama "Infernal Affairs".

Pretty good film. I watched it twice. Well acted and well scripted.

I have been using Netflix for about two months mostly so I can watch foreign films and sleepers. The price beats the living hell out of Blockbuster for the selection, although Blockbuster is starting to move into the DVD by mail business.

I like Russian and Mexican films so far, mostly because I have a grounding in he language and the culture.. Until I saw "Internal Affairs", however, I was less than impressed with Chinese cinema, with two exceptions: "The Road Home" which was one of the most compelling stories I have ever seen rendered on film by anyone, and "Infernal Affairs".

Foreign films so far have been far less pretentious that American films; film makers seem to be more concerned about telling a tale than to preach and teach, like American film makers.

Thanks to Netflix I get to see Salma Hayak films including "The Maldonaldo Miracle", which is her directorial debut. I recently watched "Frida", a film she starred in after watching her on "Traffic".

I am such a pig that when watching her in "Frida" all I could think of what how cute she was. But if that gets me in front of one of her films, then so be it.

If you have something to add, Fire Away!
